Federal Appellate Litigation
Many significant tax disputes are decided on appeal. Stone Tax Counsel serves as appellate counsel in federal tax cases before the U.S. Courts of Appeals, in appeals from the U.S. Tax Court and federal district courts.
Matters We Handle
Appeals of U.S. Tax Court decisions
Appeals of federal district court decisions in tax refund cases
Appeals involving partnership, penalty, and valuation issues
Issues where the federal circuits disagree

Our Approach
An appeal is decided on the record made at trial, so cases are tried with the appellate record in mind and the issues that matter are preserved from the start. On appeal, the briefing focuses on the few issues most likely to change the result, with close attention to how the governing circuit has decided similar questions.
Experience
William A. Stone III is admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and currently represents taxpayers in appeals pending before that court. His Tax Notes writing covers appellate decisions reversing the Tax Court in conservation easement cases.
